My bake story: first times

MY BAKE STORY

Hi everyone, I'm Phumy Ade. I am seventeen years old.......I love writing, reading, baking, trash dancing, sleeping and being a realist!

Yes, I love baking; matter of fact, I started baking at the age of fourteen which happens to be the same age that I started writing.

In that light, one of my works is on the verge of getting published.....yay!

At age thirteen, I knew nothing, yeah literally not half of the things I know now, I just really liked the idea of making cake.

The first cake I made was not with any form of measurement, was not baked in a baking pan and was not baked in an oven.
I just put a generic amount of margarine{which I called butter then}, added an equal amount of sugar, flour, eggs and milk and then baked in a stainless steel bowl or a small pot.......in a large pot of sand on a stove!

The horror now!

The first frosting I made was  prepared with a generic amount of margarine, caster sugar, vanilla and milk....which I would mix with a spoon and spread on top of the cake with a kitchen knife!

The first chocolate cake I made was with no measurement.....and cocoa powder was replaced with milo beverage!

The first batch of cup cakes I made.....I didn't use a muffin tin......I set the cupcake paper down and poured the batter into it like that!

The first sponge cake I made.....I poured the egg yolk and flour mixture over the meringue.....I didn't fold it in....I just poured into the non-parchment paper pan and baked.

The first time I baked in a convention oven.....I did not use degrees, I just set the timer, left it at a 110 degrees and baked.... and the bad thing about it was that the cake would burn at the top and the bottom would still be watery{unbaked}!

The first time I baked an actual cake, I got the frosting right for the first time too......I used it to cover the unbalanced cake with a kitchen knife.....and I didn't even comb it; I would smoothen it with the other straight side of the knife!

I didn't even know how to use a piping bag then, I would decorate the cake with all sorts of shit like frutos, noreos biscuit, skittles, wafer stix etc and I would replace piping bag with a used sachet water nylon!

Boy, the struggle was real.....and it still is!

The first time I used a recipe that requires butter milk{a red velvet cake], I had to combine lime and milk together to substitute for the butter milk. The cake turned out to be wine velvet!

The first semi-naked cake I made was due to shortage of frosting....and it actually turned out to be really good!

The first large cake I made was a 16" cake......which I made for my momma's birthday; it was the first and still is till date...!

The first time I did fondant....it broke...so like I couldn't waste it, so I had to put it on the cake like that and then, it got watery and gooey!

The first time I covered a cake in meringue frosting, I didn't really know how to work my way around it....it got really messy because of how sticky meringue frosting can be.....but it eventually worked out just fine!

  The first time I did a lime cake, it was so limey, I had to throw it away, basically no one could eat it, mostly because I put orange peels inside [you know, orange zest, mine was replaced with orange peels] and I used actual lime {I squeezed in the juice of about three limes}

The first time I baked with pineapple extract, I added yeast and baking powder......the cake technically over rose!

The first time I used an electric mixer, I felt like I was on top of the world......at least I wouldn't use a wooden spatula to mix anymore!

The first time I covered a cake in chocolate glaze, it didn't turn out good. I crumb coated the cake with butter cream frosting oblivious to the fact that glaze and fat don't sync! I poured the glaze over the crumb coated cake and it all came pouring down.....but the good thing was that I was able to work my way around it;....after all I was getting smarter and understanding more of the cake shit!

So now, I bake with an actual measurement, I frost with a palette knife, I use cocoa powder in my chocolate cakes, I bake in a baking tin, I bake with degrees, I fold in correctly......now I am a good baker, although I still got lots more to learn, but at least, I'm already on the right path!

Baking is something I feel is already a part of  me.......I love it, I really love it!
